8/5 Music Industry Builds Support Through Technology

From VOA Learning English, this is the Technology Report.

Technology has brought major changes to the music industry.

Music lovers listen to and buy music on the Internet.

They can also watch live shows of artists on the Internet.

And music makers as well as music industry officials use social media to reach the public and increase interest.

Nick Sherwin is the founder of the band Suburban Skies.

He says 21st century technology permits a band to control its own future.

He save social media make this possible.

Sherwin says the Internet and social media have created possibilities for musicians.

He says the way to success is to give visitors more than one kind of experience.

Sherwin says content is most important.

Music industry officials discussed the future the business during an international conference in Los Angeles, California.

They said musicians across the country are choosing to perform live following the drop in CD sales in the United States.

Rob Light is head of music at the Creative Artists Agency.

He says live shows are providing artists with most of their earnings.

There has also been a big increase in the number of music festivals.

These events are advertised an social media.

Bob Pittman leads the media company Clear Channel Communications.

He says music lovers still listen to radio.

He says 70 percent of Americans say they find new music on radio.

Rob Light disagrees. He believes radio will soon be a thing of the past.

But Nick Sherwin is not worried.

He just wants the Internet to help him reach all who like his kind of music.

For VOA Learning English, I’m Carolyn Presutti.
